Thanks for coming to learn more about the GHS Robotics Club! Below you’ll find general information on our program and what info you might need to join us. When you are ready to learn more, you can send us an email at contact@quasics.org
- Who can join Gateway High School’s Robotics Club?
- Any student in grades 9-12
- How big is the Robotics Club?
- We usually have around 10-15 students in the club, but are always recruiting!
- What if I don’t know anything about Robots?
- That is fine! No experience is required, and we are more than happy to help any student learn anything they might be interested in!
- When does the club meet?
- To accommodate for various student and coaches schedules, the club usually meets in the evening from 6 PM to 9 PM on specific weekdays, and optionally from Noon to 5 PM on Saturdays
- How can I become a member?
- Just come to a meeting and see if it’s something you would like to do!
- Does it cost anything?
- We do ask our members to pay $25 in dues per season once they are sure they are going to join. These dues help offset the cost of team uniforms and travel expenses to our off-season competitions. If paying dues may be a financial burden, please reach out to the coaches. We will not turn anyone away over dues.
- How do I get to the club room?
- The club works out of Room 136 in the Tech Ed hallway at the High School, which can be found by walking past the cafeteria doors and making a left at the end of the hall.
- What games do the robots compete in?
- Our Robotics Competition is hosted by an organization called FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and more information can be found about the competition here: https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/frc
- Every year FIRST releases a new game challenge, this makes sure that every year the competition is fresh and exciting!
- What kind of community events does the club do?
- The club participates in dozens of community events per year all around the Pittsburgh area! We have recurring events including our Girl Scouts STEM badge workshops, the Monroeville Independence Day parade, the Public Library Fun Fest, Monroeville CommUNITY Day, and more. We also get invited to a lot of one-time events, including running a workshop for teachers at Google Pittsburgh and a tour of the UBER self-driving car facility.
- Check out our 2019 Chairman’s Award video for a look at what we do!
- How can joining the club impact my future?
- Besides learning practical robot-related and leadership skills, there are many other reasons to join the robotics club!
- FIRST offers the chance to receive scholarships for participating on a FIRST Robotics Competition team, as well as many other awards that can be used on resumes and college applications.
- In addition to skills and scholarships, many tech-related companies are familiar with FIRST (often sponsoring teams and events), and many of our students have continued on awesome STEM careers!
- Quasics advocates for many causes. What are a few of them?
- Demi Cuccia Foundation (teen dating violence awareness)
- American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
- Pittsburgh Pride
- FIRST National Advocacy Conference as well as meeting with State Representative Mike Doyle in our workshop
- Robotics programs in schools – we presented at a “Teacher Tech” workshop hosted by Google Pittsburgh, spoke with hundreds of local teachers at TRETC, and presented to 20+ local Principals at a meeting hosted by Gateway High School
- Millions of dollars in scholarships are available through FIRST and partnering universities. In many cases, you qualify to apply simply by being on a team like ours! Apply apply apply! FIRST Scholarship Program
